Shorts / Pants: Ideally you want to find clothing that is comfortable, breathable and for some fashionable (if that’s your thing). Players wear anything from surf shorts to athletic sport shorts and when it’s a bit cooler out, it’s not uncommon to see shorts overtop of spandex pants. Your basic breathable warm-up or aerobic pant will work as well. Some leagues/players have even been seen wearing skirts with shorts underneath. Ultimate can be associated with making a fashion statement. Just remember to be comfortable. Choose something that allows you to pivot around (move side to side) and something that is breathable and you are set. Ultimate allows you to express your individuality, so basically anything goes at the end of the day.
T-shirts/Jersey: You want to ensure it is also 100% breathable. You always want to make sure your clothing fits comfortably as you will be doing a lot of running, jumping and who knows maybe even some diving for the disc (laying out), so you might want to leave your favourite $200 Ed Hardy T at home. Some leagues provide shirts but many leagues leave your uniforms up to your team or team captain to decide upon. Your team will either decide on a team jersey/shirt or ask everyone to chip in a few dollars to get them made. Visit the UJ store for any items you may need. .It is also important to bring a light and a dark shirt to your games in case you are ever playing a team with a similar colour.
Footwear: You’ll want to invest in a pair of soft cleats (metal cleats are not allowed). Typically players wear soccer cleats. There are manufactures out there that sell an ultimate cleat (visit the UJ store for some great deals). If you do not want to invest in cleats off the get go, you are allowed to wear running shoes (just make sure they have good support and have a good tread on the bottom). There is lots of cutting in and out / pivoting (side to side action) and you will want to get the best grip possible.
Disc: If you’re looking to purchase a disc, make sure it is 175 grams. This is the weight of game discs. Most leagues sell them so finding one shouldn’t be a problem. Check out our disc section at the UJ store.
Other: Pylons / cones are used in Ultimate to mark out the field space (in and out of bounds). Typically, it is up to the team captain to purchase these and bring them to each of the games + mark off the field space. Ultimate Junkies also recommends you invest in a good environmentally friendly water bottle. You will want to ensure you bring plenty of water to your games, as there is lots of running and if playing in the summer months you’ll want to take the heat into consideration.
