5 Key Points to remember when playing ultimate for your first time:
1. Always cover your player : One of the hardest things to do when you are first starting out is to remember to cover your player from the opposing team. If you have played other sports that involved covering you will understand this concept a bit better. However, if you are totally knew to this concept of covering a player, just remember never allow them the opportunity to catch a pass (you should always be following them and note where they are on the field at all times).
2. No contact allowed: Watch your body at all times that you do not crash into anyone while trying to run or jump for the disc. If you do connect with another player, he or she has the right to call a foul on you.
3. Don’t run with the disc: If you catch it, don’t panic you have 10 seconds to throw it. A member of your team will always be around to help you out. Just take a deep breath, and count to three then begin looking for the player on your team who is open. Way too often when you’re new to ultimate and you catch the disc, you just want to throw it away immediately. If you learn not to panic, just plant your feel, breath for three seconds and then look for the best person open – you will find, less errors will occur this way.
4. GAME Spirit: Attitude and sportsmanship are key attributes to Ultimate. If you’re feeling heated or annoyed in anyway, take a deep breath and remember what sport you are playing.
5. Enjoy it: Enjoy the sport. Just remember everyone playing starting off as a newbie, so don’t feel intimidated and always remember that no one in ultimate is laughing at you, we all started of new at one point or another, so just remember, you deserve that same opportunity.
