1. I am interested in Playing – where can I play?
There are many leagues and clubs available throughout Canada (and the world). If you’re looking for league to join click here for a listing of leagues across the country. If you are outside of Canada click here for a listing of leagues listed with the UPA (Ultimate Players Association).
2. How do you throw a Frisbee properly?
Throwing a disc is about using your wrist. You want to feel a snap in the wrist when you release the disc, this will provide more power and accuracy.
3. What type of equipment will I need to play?
Ultimate is a very inexpensive sports to play. Most players will purchase cleats (soft rubber, not metal), in order to provide better grip on the field. Any smooth surface field can be used to play but many leagues and clubs play on soccer fields and use cones/pylons to mark field space. Typical attire to play in is anywhere from surf shorts to running gear. Visit the ujstore.com(coming soon) for ideas. There are some teams who will splurge for team uniforms (usually it is up to the team or team captain to determine whether the team will purchase uniforms). There is a lot of running and pivoting involved so you want to wear something comfortable, breathable and of course for all you fashion gurus out there, something fashionable or memorable, if that’s your thing.
4. What types of discs are used?
Ultimate is played with a 175 gram disc; this is heavier than most and not as flimsy as your basic Frisbee used on a beach. The Ultimate Players Association (UPA) has created disc standards that provide players with the highest quality discs possible. There are “UPA Approved” discs which are tested by Ultimate players and have been accepted for use by leagues, UPA members and within tournaments. A listing of approved discs can be found on the Ultimate Players Association website. If you’re looking to purchase a disc check out the ujstore.com for some great discounts.
5. How long does a game usually last?
Depending on what league or club you join will determine the length of the game. Most leagues or clubs go by points; 15, or 17 needed to win. Many leagues use time caps anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour. On average games last anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours. Game times may vary in tournament play.
